Don't Want An Ending: Sam Tsui and Kurt Schneider in Manila!

"At  least tonight, it's just you and me and honestly, that's everything I need…"

I don't go to concerts. Only few artists nowadays are really worth watching live I suppose. Aside from the expensive tickets, I'm very picky of  the artists; I choose those who I could look up to and will surely inspire me. Because a night with them is just for entertainment, but good memories and experiences are much more treasured long time.

I've known these artists since 2011 but I've only got to "fangirl" over them early this year. Sam Tsui looked like my former crush and I only knew him for his version of "Jar of Hearts" and "Just a Dream" (with Christina Grimmie).  Kurt Schneider…, well, he's Kurt Schneider. He's not really that high profile person so I barely know him.
Until early this year a lot of my friends shared a video of the cover of "Counting Stars" by Alex Goot, Chrissy Constanza, and Kurt. I don't even know them back then and I haven't even heard the original song! But then I gave up and watched it and found everything; from the prod, music and direction; cool. Then here's the Let it Go/Let her Go mash-up of Sam Tsui which I also found very cleverly done. These vids on replay, a friend of mine pointed out Kurt to be her crush and told me that he's so great in instruments and has that adorable personality. Wondered, I stream over Kurt's channel during my free times and that's where the rabbit hole started.

Sam Tsui and Kurt Schneider were schoolmates and graduates of Yale University, who love music so much they started making music videos around 2009. Sam has that incredible vocal range that suits ballads and pop very well, while Kurt ,although has that mellow voice, he doesn't sing much but does the production, recording, direction, arrangement and acoustics. He's known for playing various instruments known to mankind (haha!). Well, that's very basic intro if you're not a fangirl of these two. But in my own terms, these tandem make me discover originals from their covers and find the latter very well done. They also make originals, which are also greatly (and mostly) written by Kurt and performed by Sam. As of now I love Kurt's one-take shots of Bruno Mars medley and Maroon 5 medley while I can't stop singing Sam Tsui's mashups, Summer Pop Medley, Michael Jackson medley, and originals: Make it Up, Shadow, Grey Area and Don't Want an Ending.

Now, I knew why my friend liked Kurt! And I do love him too!
Just this summer I promised that if ever they would schedule a concert here in the Philippines, I would surely go and watch these two perform. And behold, just few weeks after that realization of mine, they announced that they will have a two-night show here in June! The ticket prices were fine, even though we only have few weeks to save up. I got really excited and we all planned to watch.
I also included it to my birthday wish list! Well, look who greeted me! So adorable Kurt! :3

Even though I wasn't contacted to cover their press con, I am one of those people who's interested more about Kurt's stories and experiences behind the camera and on the song sheets. I'm the kind of person who appreciates the art in the production and hopes to give proper credit to them. On the other hand, I also want to ask Sam about his choice of songs and future developments on the genre. As of now I'm liking how their choice of songs fits the singer's range and personality. However, if you're not just fan but also a critic, you might find this very safe sometimes. Fortunately, they do mash-ups and medleys which are fresh and fun so, that's kudos!
But what I've heard from the press release, they said that "In the end of the day, we are just kids who love music", which I really find inspiring and humble. Only few artists give sincere love to their fans and as a fan, I do appreciate how they reach out.

So really, what's the reason not to watch SamKurtMNL?
Well for us, studies! Haha! And we lack funds. In fact I just had my ticket by June 24 sponsored by my friend Irish, because she can't go. Well, I assured that she will be avenged… so I documented the concert well!

I attended the June 26 concert. And that was a rainy day and there was heavy traffic that made me arrive around 9pm! I thought I was already late for the concert but fortunately the concert just started around ten minutes later.

Tales of A Brokenheart-ed: Sa Wakas Press Preview

"Kwentuhan lang wala namang masama   Oh usap lang, ibaon muna sa limot ang lungkot"-Kwentuhan, Sugarfree

Read at your own heart's risk :)

The songs of Sugarfree echoed beautifully in a "Broadway-fied" show last Thursday night. Sa Wakas, a Pinoy Rock Musical featured the songs of one of the most beloved rock band, Sugarfree. Their songs are very relatable and always has that story like "Kwarto" , "Wag Ka Nang Umiyak", "Dear Kuya"," Tulog Na" and "Bawat Daan", which is exclusively written by Ebe Dancel for Sa Wakas. I had a chance to watch Vic Robinson as Topper; a photographer and is torn between two lovers,  Caisa Borromeo as Lexi; a neurosurgery resident with hopes of getting to the top and Kyla Rivera as Gabbi;a photo blogger turned magazine editor  , and the rest of the cast, sing and act in a love story that raises the timeless question of why relationships fall apart…

Like what I said, it's very timely! And exciting. 'Cause you'll never know what will happen, if it's going to be a happy ending after all. Topper's in love with the two girls , Lexi and Gabbi, and the story revolves on how to get through their relationships. As what Gabbi said to Topper " Ano tayo? Nakikiuso sa mga teleserye? Kabit movies?", and really that is very hyped nowadays. What's cute in here is that you could relate easily with the characters more because of the songs. :) It became entertaining and less the drama. Though I should warn you, it could break your heart too. For me that hasn't entered a romantic relationship yet, how did this musical moved me in any way?

I could relate to one thing.

The rejection. <  / 3

And unluckily, there's a bunch of it here. :) So I dare you to face it! Haha LoL :)
Gabbi and Topper

Sa Wakas Memorable line #1
Gabbi to Topper: "Buong-buo binigay ko sa'yo. Pero ikaw, Mr.50%!"

Lexi and Topper

Sa Wakas Memorable Line #2
Lexi to Topper: "You know what hurts the most? When the person you loved for a very long time wasn't the same person you fell in love with."

Topper singing Dear Kuya

One of the reasons why I was eager to watch the show is to see Vic Robinson. When I saw the him on the website, I became curious about him. I really think he's handsome! Haha XD But sadly I haven't got picture with him. Huhu T.T  When I first heard him sing, I was really amazed *_*! I really like guys who sings very well, and Vic was no exception. So heart-felt. :3

P.S. Vic, if you're reading this… I just want to tell you how long I've waited for you…. To go down the stairs T.T  *#2 heart broken * Chos!haha XD

But all in all, the show stayed true with its concept of letting us feel this love story along with the songs. With the great singing and well-played story, you will surely laugh, cry and burst out!

Lexi and Topper singing "Tulog Na"

One of my most memorable scenes . Very dreamy :3

This is one of my fave scenes! When Topper and Lexi were arguing about the TV channel. Lexi's watching "One More Chance" yet Topper wants to watch the finals of NBA OKC vs. Heat! LoL Haha XD

Okay, too much of the spoilers!
The cast and the ensemble

And of course I wouldn't miss a picture with Ebe Dancel!

Wouldn't miss the chance!!

A question from MYX, " Are you a fan of Sugarfree?"
I always liked their songs. REALLY. I knew one (and I like)when I hear one. Like what the producer, Charissa Ann Pammit said, " So if you're not a  Sugarfree fan now, I guarantee that by the end of the show, you will be." And that, my readers, is how Sa Wakas made me an instant fan! But as what I said in the interview, I really liked their songs and more when it was sung in the play. They merged. Beautifully. :)

I know you're also finding Vic. Me too!!! Where he's been? I really don't know! I almost didn't want to go home until I find him and take pictures with him. But sadly, we're in a hurry. Aww.

But the show left me a malignant Last Song Syndrome of Sugarfree songs. Risk it, Sugarfree fans out there!

Sa Wakas: A New Pinoy Rock Musical

Here's another musical to look forward to by OPM music lovers out there! Especially to the fans of Sugarfree and musicals! Sa Wakas:A New Pinoy Rock Musical featuring the songs of Sugarfree!
Sa Wakas is a new musical that weaves together the songs of one of the country’s most beloved rock bands, Sugarfree. Co-written by Andrei Nikolai Pamintuan and Mariane Abuan with the music beautifully arranged by EjayYatco, Sa Wakas promises to bring together the world of pop rock and musical theater in one groundbreaking show.

A bittersweet love story that chronicles the end of one relationship and the beginning of another, Sa Wakas raises the timeless question of why relationships fall apart. Thematically, it also explores the concept of how the choices we make in life define who we are as a person.

Their theme is so timely, perfect for summer dates and to those who want to spend their summer nights watching a good show.

Sugarfree was an alternative rock group led by Ebe Dancel that gave u sbeloved hits such as Mariposa, Burnout, ‘Wag Ka Nang Umiyak, Hari ng Sablay and Makita Kang Muli. Though the group sadly disbanded in 2011, their music still resonates today and will forever be cherished by its legions of fans.

Sa Wakas, which incidentally is also the title of the band’s first album, aims to re-introduce these heart-wrenching songs to a new generation and present it with a fresh and distinct “Broadway-fied” sound.

I've known Sugarfree since I was a grade school student since their songs are frequently resonated through the radio and some of my fave's are "Tulog Na", "Makita Kang Muli" and the "after break-up" song, "Kung Ayaw Mo Na Sa Akin". And incidentally, when I was a freshie here in UP, I became a student of Prof. Jal Taguibao , the band's bassist! And I'm proud of it!

The company is proud to have in its roster the best and most talented young stars of Philippine theater.  The title character of Topper will be alternately played by Fred Lo (9 Works Theatrical’s Rent) and Vic Robinson (PETA’s Si Juan Tamad, Ang Dyablo at Ang Limang Milyong Boto, Batang Rizal). The role of Lexi will be played by Gawad Buhay Award winner Caisa Borromeo (Repertory Philippines’ Little Women) and Laura Cabochan (CCP’s Pasinaya and Ateneo Blue Repertory’s Edges).
